AN-NUR (النُّورُ) The Light

NURUS SAMAWATI WAL-ARD (نور السموات والأرض) Light of the Heavens and the Earth

Linguistically, NUR indicates anything that gives off light that makes things manifest and reveals its surroundings. Allah has a light related to Him as an attribute of His essence. AN-NUR is the divine light of all the worlds and He is the source of all lights. He is the light of wisdom and guidance that illuminates the heart. He is the One by whom everything is made visible. He endows His creatures with spiritual and concrete light. His light clarifies, manifests and reveals the obscure. It clears away all darkness and directs aright.

The Prophet (ﷺ) advises believers to say the following in their prayers: “O Allah! Put light in my heart, light in my tongue, light in my sight, light in my hearing, light on my right, light on my left, light above me, light beneath me, light in front of me, and light behind me. Put light in my soul, and give me great light.” [Bukhari and Muslim]

  • Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things. [An-Nur 24:35]
  • And the earth will shine with the Light of its Lord…. [Az-Zumar 39:69]
  • … the Day when Allah will not disgrace the Prophet and those who believed with him. Their light will proceed before them and on their right; they will say, “Our Lord, perfect for us our light and forgive us. Indeed, You are over all things competent.” [At-Tahrim 66:8]
  • The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “You are the Light of the heavens and the earth.” [Bukhari]
  • The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Light is His Hijab (veil), if He uncovers it then the brightness and splendor of His Face would burn His creation so far as His sight reaches.” [Muslim]
