Al-Alim, Al-Allam

AL-‘ALĪM (العليم) The All-Knowing

AL-‘ᾹLIM (العَالِمُ) The Knowing

Al-‘ALLĀM (العلام) The Most Knowing

‘ALLĀMUL GHUYUB (عَلاَّمُ الْغُيُوبِ) Knower of the unseen

‘ᾹLIMUL GHAYBI WASH-SHAHADAH (عَالِمُالْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ) Knower of the Unseen and the Seen

Linguistically, the more intense form of ‘ᾹLIM (one who knows) is ‘ALĪM (one who intuitively knows with certainty) and its most intensified form is ‘ALLᾹM (one who knows the most). Therefore, ‘ALLᾹM indicates perfection, completeness, absoluteness and totality of Allah’s ILM (knowledge). His attribute of being ‘ALLAM (most knowing) is always linked to the GHAYB (unseen) to stress that human knowledge is imperfect and limited, despite the modernization and advancement of science and technology.

He knows and comprehends the complete details of everything with certainty. Allah’s knowledge is all-inclusive, comprehensive, concealed and detailed. It is neither acquired through learning nor preceded by ignorance nor followed by shortcomings. His knowledge of past, present and future is deeply-rooted and complete in all respects. Knowledge about Allah is the origin and basis of every other type of knowledge. By knowing Him, all the other types of knowledge will be known. Allah has the highest level of knowledge and the highest form of knowledge is the knowledge about Him.
