AS-SAYYID (السيد) The Master
AS-SAYYID is the One who is perfect in His Sovereignty and in complete authority. Perfect mastership belongs to Allah alone. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and thus the word SAYYID is not to be used in praise. All beings are but servants to Allah, none has the right to be worshipped except Him alone.
The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade the Muslims to praise him excessively so that they may never raise him above the status in which Allah has placed him. It is reported on the authority of Umar (Radiyallahu Anhu – may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Do not extoll me as the Christians extolled the son of Maryam [i.e. Jesus]. I am no more than a slave (of Allah) and so (instead), say: Allah’s Slave and His Messenger.” [Bukhari]. This implies believing in what he says, obeying in what he commands and abstaining in what he forbids.
- It is reported on the authority of Abdullah ibn Ash-Shikhkhir (Radiyallahu Anhu – may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: ‘I went with a delegation of Banu Amir to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and said, “You are our sayyid.” To this he replied, “The Sayyid (Lord) is Allah, the Blessed and Exalted.”Then we said, “You are one of us most endowed with excellence and superiority.” To this, the Prophet (ﷺ) replied, “Say what you have to say, or part of what you have to say, and do not let the Satan get you carried away.”‘ [Abu Dawud, with a good chain]
