Salah Al-Eid Al-Fitr

THE EID AL-FITR PRAYER صلاة العيد الفطر

  • Eid (plu. AYAD عياد)
  • Derived from “ADA YA’UDU” meaning “he returned, he is returning as if they are returning to it”
  • Also derived from “ADAH” meaning “custom/habit, as they have become accustomed to it”
  • Eid-Al-Fitr is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal (10th month of Hijri) at the completion of the holy fasting month of Ramadan

  • Wake up early. Prepare for personal cleanliness; take care of details of clothing, etc. Take a Ghusl (complete bath) after Fajr. Brush your teeth. Dress up, putting on best clothes available, whether new or clean old ones
  • The Prophet ﷺ used to wear his most beautiful clothes and had a special cloak that he would wear on the two Eids and in Jum’ah (Friday) prayer
  • Use perfume (for men only)
  • Have breakfast on Eid-Al-Fitr before leaving for prayer ground. The Prophet ﷺ would not go out until he had eaten an odd number of dates. [Eid-Al-Adha, eat breakfast after prayer/slaughtering Udhiya (sacrifice) if you are offering it]
  • Go to prayer ground early

  • It begins from the time the sun is 3 meters above the horizon until the sun reaches its meridian
  • It is Sunnah for Salah Al-Eid Al-Fitr to be delayed in order to give people time to pay Zakat-Al-Fitr. [Sunnah to offer Salah Al-Eid Al-Adha early in order to allow more time for the people to offer the sacrifice]

  • Offer Salat-Al-Eid in Jama’ah (congregation) in an open place except when weather is not permitting like rain, snow, dust storm…
  • It can be done inside the Mosque but preferable to do it outside if there is no reason to do otherwise
  • The Prophet ﷺ prayed the 2 Eids in the outskirts of Madinah and he never prayed it in his Mosque, except once when it was raining

  • Congratulate one another on the days of Eid
  • Preferable to go to the prayer ground on  one way and come from it on another way. Wisdom: to congratulate everyone
  • Jabir ibn Nafis reports: “When the companions of the Prophet met each other on the day of Eid, they would say to each other: “Taqabbalallah Minna Wa Minka.”

TAKBIRAT AL-EID تكبيرات العيد

  • Recite TAKBIRAH AL-EID on the way to the prayer ground until the beginning of Salah Al-Eid
  • Takbirat after Sawm start right after Salah Al-Fajr [Takbirat for Hajj is different]
  • Words of Takbirat: ALLAHU AKBAR (3X) LA ILAHA ILALLAH, ALLAHU AKBAR (2X) WA LILLAHIL HAMD = Allah is the greatest (3x) There is no god but Allah.Allah is the greatest (2x) To Allah belongs the Praise

  • It is a stressed Sunnah (Sunnah Muakkadah)
  • Therefore, all Muslims are required to attend the Eid prayers to participate in this joyous occasion: men, women, married, single, young, old, menstruating women, women without Hijab
  • Anyone who is able should pray (resident, traveler, in the mosque, at home…)

  • No Adhan, no Iqamah
  • Must be offered in congregation
  • 2 Rak’ah (units): 1st have 7 additional Takbirs; 2nd has 5 additional Takbirs
  • Then followed by 2 Khutbah (sermon), not part of Salah (can talk, can leave… Sunnah to listen to it).
  • Additional Takbirs and Khutbah are Sunnah
  • No Sunnah Salah (not even Tahiyyat if done inside the Masjid)

  • Sunnah Salah is open until the Imam arrives (i.e. Khutbah starts)
  • 2 Adhan: 1st call about half an hour before the 2nd one
  • Then Khutbah starts (2 parts)
  • No Sunnah Salah before/during it (offer Tahiyyat-ul Masjid quickly if  late). If Salah already started, join the Jama’ah and do not offer Tahiyyat anymore)
  • Khutbah is part of Salah (be quiet, no talking) because it replaces  Salah Ad-Duhur
  • After Khutbah, Iqamah is said
  • 2 Rak’ah (units): 1st -Al-Jum’ah; 2nd -Al-Munafiqun (Sunnah)
  • Sunnah Salah after: 2 minimum, 6 maximum (2 if at home , 4 in Masjid)
