Fada’il Shahar Ramadan

VIRTUES OF THE MONTH OF RAMADAN فضائل شهر رمضان

“O people! The month of Allah has come with His mercies and blessings. This is the month that is the best of all months. Its days are the best of days, its nights are the best of nights, its hours are the best of hours.”

FORGIVENESS

  • The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and with the hope of reward, all his previous sins will be forgiven.” [Al-Bukhari, Fath, #37]
  • Forgiveness on the last night. When the Prophet ﷺ was asked: “O Messenger of God, is it the Night of Power?” And he answered: “No, but when a laborer is given his wage after finishing his work.”

DOUBLING THE REWARD MANIFOLD

  • The Prophet ﷺ said in Hadith Qudsi (sacred saying), quoting the Lord Most High: “Every deed of the sons of Adam is for himself except the act of fasting – it is for Me and I recompense it.” [Agreed upon]
  • For himself means it can atone for his sins
  • For Me means done sincerely for His Pleasure
  • The Recording Angels know the reward of every good deed except Siyam

OBLIGATORY DEED = 70X AND VOLUNTARY DEED = OBLIGATORY

  • Whoever performs an obligatory deed in (this month) shall receive the reward of performing seventy obligations at any other time
  • Whoever performs any of the (optional) good deeds in (this month) shall receive the same reward as performing an obligatory deed at any other time

GAINING REWARD BY GIVING FOOD

  • The Prophet ﷺ said: “He who provides for the breaking of the fast of another person earns the same reward as the one who is fasting, and no reduction is made in the reward of the latter.” [Tirmidhi]
  • It was said: “O Messenger of Allah, not all of us can find that which to provide for the fasting person.” He said: “Allah will give this reward for providing a fasting person with a date, or a drink of water or a drop of milk. And it is a month during which the start of it is Mercy, and the middle of it is Forgiveness and the end of it is Salvation from the Hellfire.” [Collected by Al-Bayhaqi]

DUA ACCEPTED

  • The Prophet ﷺ has said: Three are those groups whose supplications are not turned down: the just Imam, the fasting person until he breaks his fast and the oppressed and the one suffering injustice, for God raises his supplication above the cloud and opens to it the gates of heavens. And God the Almighty declares: By my might, I shall give you triumph, even if after a while. [Ahmad, Al-Tirmithi and Ibn Maja]

EXPIATION OF SINS

  • Abu Hurayrah (Radiyallahu Anhu – may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “The time between the five daily prayers, two consecutive Friday Prayers, and two consecutive Ramadans are expiations for all that has happened during that period, provided that one has avoided the grave (major) sins.” [Muslim]

NIGHT OF DECREE

  • The Muslim Ummah (community) is honored by the advent of the Night of Decree
  • “Verily, We have sent it (this Qur’an) down in the night of Al-Qadr (Decree).” [Al-Qadr 97:1]

QUR’AN REVEALED

  • The Muslim Ummah is honored by the revelation of Qur’an
  • “The month of Ramadan in which the Qur’an was sent down, a guidance to people, clear signs of the guidance and the criterion.” [Al-Baqarah 2:185]
  • The Prophet ﷺ has said. “The best among you are those who study the Qur’an and teach it.” [Bukhari]

INTERCESSION

Fasting will intercede for a person on the Day of Judgement

The Prophet ﷺ said: “The fast and the Qur’an are two intercessors for the servant of Allah on the Day of Resurrection. The fast will say: ‘O Lord, I prevented him from his food and desires during the day. Let me intercede for him.’ The Qur’an will say: ‘I prevented him from sleeping at night. Let me intercede for him.’ And their intercession will be accepted.” [Ahmad]

UMRAH = HAJJ WITH THE PROPHET

  • Umrah (minor visit to The House) during Ramadan is equivalent to performing Hajj with the Prophet ﷺ. He said: “Umrah in Ramadan is equal to pilgrimage with me.” [Agreed upon]
  • He also said: “Performing Umrah in Ramadan is equal in reward to performing Hajj.”  [Bukhari and Muslim]

RAYYAN: SPECIAL GATE

  • “In Paradise there is a gate called Al-Rayyan, through which those who fast will enter, and no one will enter it except them; when they have entered, it will be locked, and no one else will enter through it.”  [Al-Bukhari, Fath, #1797]

PARADISE GATES ARE OPEN HELL GATES ARE CLOSED

  • Abu Hurayrah (Radiyallahu Anhu – may Allah be pleased with him) has quoted the Prophet ﷺ as having said: “When Ramadan comes the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed and Satan shall be fettered (chained).” [Agreed upon]

FAR AWAY FROM JAHANNAM

  • “Whoever fasts one day for the sake of Allah, Allah will remove him a distance of seventy years from the Hellfire.” [Muslim, 2/808]
