Al-Hafiyy

AL-ḤAFIYY (الحفي) The Ever Most Gracious

AL-HAFIYY is the One who is decent, noble, knowing, merciful, gracious, mindful and considerate. He is extremely solicitous about someone’s state and needs

Evidence/s

  • Ibrahim (Abraham) said: “Peace be on you! I will ask forgiveness of my Lord for you. Verily, He is unto me Ever Most Gracious.” [Maryam 19: 47]

Al-Mughith

AL-MUGHITH (المغيث) The One Sought For Help

This name is mentioned occasionally from the various lists of the 99 names of Allah from few sources, but no proof from the holy Quran and others only mentioned that it is from the Sunnah, without further elaboration. ISTIGHATHA is the act of seeking help from Allah. Synonymous to the name AL-MUSTA’AN (or AL-MUSTI’AN), AL-MUGHITH is the One who relieves us from hardship, depression, distress, sadness, anxiety. The universe and all of its inhabitants, whether living or non-living, takes refuge in Him and asks for help only from Him. Allah says: “And those you call upon besides Him are unable to help you, nor can they help themselves.” [Al-‘Araf 7:197]

Evidence/s

  •  [Remember] when you asked help of your Lord, and He answered you, “Indeed, I will reinforce you with a thousand from the angels, following one another.” [Al-Anfal 8:9]
  • But one who says to his parents UFF to you; do you promise me that I will be brought forth [from the earth] when generations before me have already passed on [into oblivion]?” while they call to Allah for help [and to their son], “Woe to you! Believe! Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth.” But he says, “This is not but legends of the former people.” [Al-Ahqaf 46:17]
  • Ubadah Ibnus-Samit (radiyallahu anhu) narrated: “During the days of the Prophet there was a hypocrite [i.e. Abdullah Ibn Ubayy Ibn Salul] who used to harm the believers, some of them (the believers) said, “Come (support) with us while we appeal to Allah’s Messenger for assistance against this hypocrite.” The Prophet replied, “Verily, no one should seek to me for assistance. Indeed, it is Allah Who is to be sought for assistance and help.”  [Tabarani]. The Prophet (ﷺ) helped them but he denounced the term they used as it implies lack of respect toward Allah. He wanted to teach them to block all possible avenues leading to polytheism and keep their belief intact.
  • Anas bin Malik (radiyallahu anhu) said that the Prophet (ﷺ) said to Fatimah (his daughter): “What keeps you from hearing my will or that remind you every morning and evening, which say: ‘YA HAYYU YA QAYYUM BI RAHMATIKA ASTAGHITH, WA AS-LIH-LI SHA’NI KULLAHU ILA WA LA TAKILNI NAFSI TARFATA ‘AYNIN ABADAN (يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيُّوْمُ بِرَحْمَتِكَ أَسْتَغِيْثُ، وَأَصْلِحْ لِيْ شَأْنِيْ كُلَّهُ وَلاَ تَكِلْنِيْ إِلَى نَفْسِيْ طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ أَبَدًا) – O, Ever Living, O Self-Sustaining! By Your grace, I ask for help, fix all my affairs and do not leave me even a blink of an eye without getting help from you forever.'” [Ibn As-Sunni in Amal Al-Yawm Wa Al-Laylah #46, An-Nasa’i in Al-Kubra 381: 570, Al-Bazzar in his Musnad 4/25/3107, Al-Hakim 1: 545. This is Hadith Hasan as stated by Shaykh Al-Albani in Silsilah Al-Ahadith As-Shahihah #227]
  • Anas bin Malik (radiyallahu anhu) said that whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) has any worry or concern, he used to recite the following supplication: “YA HAYYU YA QAYYUM BIRAHMATIKA ASTAGHITH (يَا حَىُّ يَا قَيُّومُ بِرَحْمَتِكَ أَسْتَغِيثُ)  – O Ever Living, O Self-Sustaining! By Your grace, I ask for help.” [Tirmidhi #3524, Al-Hafiz Abu Tahir said that this is Hadith Hasan]

Allah, Al-Ilah

ALLAH (الله) The Only One True God
AL-ILAH (
الإله) The God

ALLAH is the proper name for the Unique God. The word ALLAH is a contraction of AL (ال) THE + ILAH (إله) GOD = AL-ILAH (الإله) THE GOD. The Hamzah is dropped for easy pronunciation. AL-ILAH (i.e., Allah) has similarities in other Semitic languages like ELAH in Aramaic and ELOHIM in Hebrew.  ALLAH is the greatest and most beautiful of His names because it encompasses all of His divine names and perfect attributes. Nothing else has been given this name, either metaphorically or literally. ALLAH cannot be described as a male or a female and cannot be found in the plural form. Al-Hassan Al-Basri said that the word “Allahumma (اللهم) O Allah” combines all the beautiful names of Allah. When one says “Allahumma,” he has called Allah by all His Beautiful Names.

  • He does not become a human being. – … There is nothing like unto Him…. [Ash-Shura 42:11]
  • He does not perform ungodly acts. – Indeed, Allah does not do injustice, even as much as an atom’s weight; while if there is a good deed, He multiplies it and gives from Himself a great reward. [An-Nisa 4:40]
  • He does not make mistakes and does not forget. – [Moses] said, “The knowledge thereof is with my Lord in a record. My Lord neither errs nor forgets.” [Ta-ha 20:52]

AL-ILAH is the One who is worshipped in truth, deserving full rights and pure worship, without rival in divinity. No one but Him is truly deserving of worship because He alone can grant benefit to man as a result of his worship. The relationship between the infinite God and the finite man is man’s worship of Him in thoughts, in words and in deeds. AL-ILAH made it a part of man’s nature to worship Him. – “And I created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone).” [Adh-Dhariyat 51:56]. Verse 4 of Surah Al-Fatihah reads “You alone do we worship and from You do we seek help” which is very clear that all forms of worship must only be directed to Allah. The Prophet (ﷺ) confirmed the concept of unity of worship saying: “If you ask in prayer ask only Allah, and if you seek help seek it only from Allah.” [Tirmidhi]

Evidence/s

  • Say (O Muhammad): “He is Allah, The One. Allah, The Self-Sufficient Master, Whom all creatures need, (He neither eats nor drinks)]. He begets not, nor was He begotten; and there is none co-equal or comparable unto Him.” [Al-Ikhlas 112:1-4]
  • He is Allah, beside Whom none has the right to be worshipped but He, the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen. He is the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. He is Allah beside Whom none has the right to be worshipped but He, the King, the Holy, the One Free from all defects, the Giver of security, the Watcher over His creatures, the All-Mighty, the Compeller, the Supreme. Glory be to Allah! (High is He) above all that they associate as partners with Him. He is Allah, the Creator, the Inventor of all things, the Bestower of forms. To Him belong the Best Names. All that is in the heavens and the earth glorify Him. And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.” [Al-Hashr 59:22-24]
  • And your god is one God. There is no deity [worthy of worship] except Him, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. [Al-Baqarah 2:163]
  • They have certainly disbelieved who say, “Allah is the third of three.” And there is no god except one God…. [Al-Ma’idah 5:73]
  • … And they were not commanded except to worship one God; there is no deity except Him. Exalted is He above whatever they associate with Him. [At-Tawbah 9:31]
  • Say (O Muhammad): “It is revealed to me that your Ilah (God) is only one Ilah (God – Allah). Will you then submit to His Will (become Muslims and stop worshipping others besides Allah)?” [Al-Anbiya 21:108]
  • It is He (Allah) Who is the only Ilah (God to be worshipped) in the heaven and the only Ilah (God to be worshipped) on the earth. And He is the All-Wise, the All-Knower. [Az-Zukhruf 43:84]
  • The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Renew your faith.” They asked: “How can we renew our faith?”  The Prophet replied: “Say always: LA ILAHA ILLALLAH – there is no god but Allah.” [Ahmad]

Ar-Rabb, Rabbul Alamin

AR-RABB (الرب) The Lord
RABBUL ‘ALAMIN (
رب العالمين) Lord of All the Worlds

RABB is the attribute most frequently used to refer to Allah in the holy Quran. AR-RABB is the true and complete owner of everything in existence. He nourishes and sustains everything in the most perfect way from stage to stage. It is He who created us and enabled all creation to exist smoothly. He regulates all beings from the earliest stage up to the goal of completion. He is not only the RABB of humans, but also of angels, jinns, galaxies and everything. RABBUL ALAMĪN is the Owner, Master, Creator and Manager of the universe.

RABB appeared many times in the restricted form (e.g., Lord of the Throne, Lord of the Heavens and Earth, Lord of the East and the West, Lord of Daybreak, Lord of Mankind….) and RABBUL ALAMIN occurred more than 40 times. The absolute sense AR-RABB can only be applied to Allah and no one else. Rabb can only be applied to anyone if followed by an adjective in order to limit its meaning as in Rabbul Bayt (owner of the house).

Allah is the Master Legislator. He is the only One who has the authority to exercise legislative power to pass laws and give commands, to decide what is lawful and what is unlawful. – And do not say about what your tongues assert of untruth, “This is lawful and this is unlawful,” to invent falsehood about Allah. Indeed, those who invent falsehood about Allah will not succeed. [An-Nahl 16:116]

Evidence/s

  • ll the praises and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds (mankind, jinn and all that exists). [Al-Fatihah 1:2]
  • … Praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds! [Al-An’am 6:45]
  • Say: “My prayer and my rites, my living and my dying, are for Allah alone, the Lord of all the worlds.” [Al-An’am 6:162]
  • … Blessed be Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. [Al-Araf 7:54]
  • All praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of the heavens and the Lord of earth, Lord of all the worlds. [Al-Jathiyah 45:36]
  • Recite in the name of your Lord who created. [Al-Alaq 96:1]

Khayrul Makirin

KHAYRUL MAKIRIN (خير الماكرين) Best of Planners
ASRA’U MAKRA (أَسْرَعُ مَكْرًا) Swifter in Planning

“Don’t fret over missed opportunities & closed doors. Instead, pause & think.
It’s the Almighty’s way of protecting us from the pain & anguish not meant for us.
Had He allowed it, we would have been left broken & in total despair!
Trust the judgment of the Best Planner always!”
Mufti Ismael Menk

Those before them plotted, but all planning belongs to Allah. He knows what each self earns, and the unbelievers soon will know who has the Ultimate Abode. [Ar-Ra’d 13:42]. Allah devises the best plan against the disbelievers’ plots. Allah says: They concocted their plots, but their plots were with Allah, even if they were such as to make the mountains vanish. [Ibrahim 14:46]. He protects the believers from these plots. It is very easy for Him to turns all their plots into failures and makes them suffer the consequences. Allah creates every incident with a purpose and for the ultimate good. He uses the disbelievers’ plots against the believers to test them. He then extends His help to those who can discern the good in the incidents He creates, and turns all of these to their benefit.

Evidence/s

  • And the disbelievers planned, but Allah planned. And Allah is the Best of Planners. [Ali Imran 3:54]
  • But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the Best of Planners. [Al-Anfal 8:30]
  • And when We give the people a taste of mercy after adversity has touched them, at once they conspire against Our verses. Say, “Allah is Swifter in Strategy (Asra’ul Makra).” Indeed, Our messengers record that which you conspire. [Yunus 10:21]

Al-Adl

AL-‘ADL (العدل) The All-Just

AL-ADL is the One whose wisdom of justice is based upon complete knowledge of the past, present and future. He created every single thing, gave each its own character and put perfectly in its suitable place. He is the One who delivers absolute justice and from whom just actions emanate. He sets matters straight in a fair, impartial and equitable manner. He is too exalted for oppression or injustice in His Divine Acts and Judgments.

Evidence/s

  • And the word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and in justice. None can alter His words, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

Ar-Rahman, Ar-Rahim

AR-RAHMAN (الرَّحْمَٰنُ) The All-Merciful
AR-RAHIM (
الرحيم) The Specifically Merciful
ARHAMUR RAHIMIN (
أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ) Most Merciful of All The Merciful
KHAYRUR RAHIMIN (
خير الراحمين) Best of All The Merciful
DHUR RAHMAH (
ذو الرحمة) Owner of Mercy

AR-RAHMAN is the One whose infinite mercy is continually showered upon all of creation, deserving or deserving, without any effort or request from them. His mercy includes all beings and He grants more rewards in response to one’s good actions.  – “My Mercy embraces everything.”  [Al-‘Araf 7:156]. His Mercy is the source of everything good in our life and all virtues stem from His boundless endless mercy.

AR-RAHIM is the One whose mercy is special only for the deserving. It indicates the constant renewal and giving of His generous rewards and gifts to those who believe in Him and hoping for salvation in the Hereafter. – “He is ever compassionate (Rahim) to the believers.” [Al-Ahzab 33:43]. No one except Allah is named or described as Ar-Rahman, but Ar-Rahim maybe used to describe others.

Evidence/s

  • Every Surah (chapter) in the holy Quran except for chapter 9 (At-Tawbah) begins with “Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim (In the name of Allah, The Merciful, The Compassionate).”
  • Indeed, it is from Solomon, and indeed, it reads: “In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.” [An-Naml 27:30]
  • “Say: He is Most Merciful God. We have believed in Him, and on Him we have put our trust. So soon will you know which (of us) it is that is in manifest error.”  [Al-Mulk 67:29]
  • [Moses] said, “My Lord, forgive me and my brother and admit us into Your mercy, for You are the Most Merciful of the Merciful.” [Al-A’raf 7:151]
  • And, [O Muhammad], say, “My Lord, forgive and have mercy, and You are the Best of the Merciful.” [Al-Mu’minun 23:118]
  • And your Lord is Most Forgiving, Owner of Mercy…. [Al-Kahf 18:58]
